Courage North Staff Information

Employment Dates:
Staff training for Courage North begins in early June. The first sessions are for adults with physical disabilities.  We have two sessions for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, a session for children with severe burns, and a session for children with hemophilia. The program ends in late August. You have the choice of working the first half, last half, or all of the summer program.

Staff Qualifications:
To qualify as a counselor at Courage North, you must be at least 18 years of age. Students who have completed their junior year of High School may qualify for a food service position. Program area directors need specialized education in an appropriate field. Applicants who have specialized skills, such as fluency in American Sign Language or experience as a Personal Care Attendant, will be given additional consideration.

Compensation:  Salaries for first year counselors and program staff begin at $175 per week plus room and board.  Salaries for professional staff, such as nurse or program area directors will be paid according to certification and skill levels.  All staff who are enrolled in post secondary education programs are eligible to apply for a scholarship paid in the fall.

Duties:
The duties of a counselor are explained in depth during counselor training. In brief, the counselor is responsible for the campers in his/her cabin. Their health and safety are the number one concern. Campers should enjoy themselves and learn new skills in communicating and working with others. The campers with a physical disability may need personal care such as feeding, toileting and dressing. With the exception of some designated time off, the counselor is "on duty" just about all the time while campers are at camp.

Restrictions:
Staff members are expected to stay on camp property during the time of each session (about two weeks). There will be days off between sessions. An evening away from camp is usually arranged once a week.
